How much space do you need for a golf simulator? For most home setups, plan on a room about 10 to 12 feet wide, 9 feet high and 16 to 18 feet long. The exact number depends on two things: the enclosure size and where your launch monitor sits (behind you, or beside the ball).
This guide uses the space guides and product pages of the sellers and makers: Shop Indoor Golf’s enclosure size chart and package pages, SkyTrak’s studio size guide, Garmin R10 setup guidance as published by PlayBetter and Carl’s Golfland, and PlayBetter’s space guides for the MLM2PRO, ST MAX and Square Omni, all read on 19 October 2026. We have not measured these rooms ourselves. See how we research and rate products.

These are seller figures, not our measurements. Taller golfers and long, upright swings need more height than any minimum.
Step 1: Check your ceiling height for a golf simulator
Ceiling height is the number most people get wrong, because it is set by your swing, not by the screen. Most guides we read ask for 9 feet. Shop Indoor Golf lists 9 feet for its SIG8 and SIG10 enclosures and 10 feet for the taller SIG12, and warns on its package pages that you may need more than 9 feet if your swing requires it. Garmin’s R10 guidance and SkyTrak’s 8-foot studio list 8 feet, which is the floor, not a comfortable target.
How to test it: stand where the mat will go and make a slow, full swing with your driver, then measure the highest point the club reaches. Add a few inches for the mat, which raises you off the floor. If you hit the ceiling, look for a spot with more height or plan to practice with shorter clubs.
Step 2: Work out the depth for your golf simulator launch monitor
Depth is where the type of launch monitor matters most.
Radar units that sit behind you
Radar launch monitors such as the Garmin R10 and the Rapsodo MLM2PRO sit on the floor behind the ball and need room to track it.
- Garmin R10: place it 6 to 8 feet behind the ball (7 feet is ideal, per Garmin’s guidance), with the ball at least 8 feet from the net. Carl’s Golfland’s R10 page suggests 10 to 12 feet from tee to impact screen.
- Rapsodo MLM2PRO: 6.5 to 8.5 feet behind the ball and at least 8 feet in front of it, so 14.5 feet minimum. PlayBetter recommends 13 feet from ball to screen and 21.5 feet in total for comfort.
So the formula is: unit distance behind the ball + ball-to-screen distance + a gap behind the screen so it can flex without hitting the wall. For an R10 at 7 feet with the ball 10 feet from the screen, that is 17 feet plus the gap. The tightest version Garmin allows (6 feet behind and 8 feet to the net) is 14 feet, which is why Garmin’s room minimum is 15 feet long.
Camera units that sit beside the ball
Camera launch monitors such as the SkyTrak ST MAX and Square Golf Omni sit next to the ball, so you need no space behind you for the unit. PlayBetter’s guides suggest about 10 feet of depth as a guideline for both, with enough room in front that the ball does not bounce back at you. SkyTrak itself suggests 17 feet of room depth for its studios, calling that comfortable.
Read our Square Golf Omni review and SkyTrak ST MAX review for more on each unit.
Step 3: Measure the width for your golf simulator room
Width keeps you from hitting the walls with the club and protects them from a shank. Shop Indoor Golf’s size chart lists a 10-foot-wide room for its 8‘4” SIG8 enclosure and 12 feet for the 10‘10” SIG10. SkyTrak gives a minimum of 10.5 feet for its 10-foot studio and an ideal of 11.5 to 15 feet.
Width for left- and right-handed golfers
If lefties and righties share the room, add width so either can stand in the middle. Camera units beside the ball must also be moved to the other side; PlayBetter calls this a pain for mixed groups with the ST MAX and Omni. Radar units behind the ball, like the MLM2PRO, need no moving.
Step 4: Pick a golf simulator enclosure that fits your room
Once you have your three numbers, match them to an enclosure. Shop Indoor Golf’s size chart gives these minimum rooms:
| Enclosure | Enclosure size (W x H x D) | Min room width | Min room length | Min ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SIG8 | 8‘4” x 8‘4” x 5’ | 10 ft | 16 ft | 9 ft |
| SIG10 | 10‘10” x 8‘4” x 5’ | 12 ft | 18 ft | 9 ft |
| SIG12 | 12‘2” x 9‘4” x 5’ | 14 ft | 20 ft | 10 ft |
| DIY 10‘4” x 7‘11” | 10‘4” x 7‘11” x 5’ | 10‘6” | 16 ft | 9 ft |
| DIY 13‘7” x 10‘4” | 13‘7” x 10‘4” x 5’ | 15 ft | 16 ft | 11 ft |
Note that Shop Indoor Golf’s own SIG10 package pages list a smaller minimum (12 feet wide, 9 feet high, at least 12 feet deep, with 15 x 10 x 15 feet recommended). The size chart’s 18-foot length is the safer figure to plan around, especially with a radar unit.

Step 5: Check the golf simulator space for garages and basements
- Garage: measure under the garage door rails and opener, not just to the ceiling. A retractable screen lets the car stay in.
- Basement: look for low beams, ducts and light fittings over the hitting spot, which is where you need the most height.
- Spare room: check depth first; bedrooms often have the width and height but not the 16 feet of length an enclosure needs.
Summary: how much space do you need for a golf simulator?
For a full enclosure, plan on about 10 to 12 feet wide, 9 feet high and 16 to 18 feet long. If your room is short, choose a camera unit beside the ball. If it is low, test your driver swing before you spend anything. And if lefties will play, add width. Frequently asked questions about golf simulator room size
What is the minimum room size for a golf simulator?
About 10 feet wide, 9 feet high and 16 feet long for a full enclosure. That is Shop Indoor Golf’s minimum for its SIG8 enclosure. Garmin lists a smaller 15 x 8 x 8 ft room for the R10 with a net, but that leaves little room for a driver swing or a side-to-side miss.
Is an 8-foot ceiling high enough for a golf simulator?
For some golfers, but it is tight. Garmin’s R10 guide and SkyTrak’s 8-foot studio list an 8-foot minimum, but most enclosure guides we read ask for 9 feet. Swing your driver slowly in the room before you buy, and look at shorter irons-only practice if your club hits the ceiling.
How deep does a room need to be for a golf simulator?
Plan on 14 to 18 feet with a radar unit behind you, and about 10 to 17 feet with a camera unit beside the ball. Radar units such as the Garmin R10 sit 6 to 8 feet behind the ball, and the ball needs at least 8 feet to the screen or net.
How wide should a golf simulator room be?
At least 10 feet for one right-handed golfer, and 12 feet or more if lefties and righties share it. Shop Indoor Golf’s size chart lists 10 feet for its SIG8 enclosure and 12 feet for the SIG10. Extra width also protects walls from shanks.
Can I put a golf simulator in my garage?
Yes, if the garage meets the width, depth and ceiling height of the enclosure you choose. Watch for the garage door rails and opener, which often sit lower than the ceiling. A retractable screen, such as the one in Shop Indoor Golf’s Square Omni Garage package, lets you still park the car.
